Write One, Sub One

Well I got my third rejection on my Dwarves story. (I had to query them to see what was up.) I think I am going to trunk that one for now. I just don't really see any markets that would be a great fit. (edit: I found another place to submit it to on Grinder, so screw it...it went back out the door.)

I submitted my entry to the forum anthology.

I think If I am going to keep doing short stories, I am going to start writing for specific markets and see how that goes.

Any new stories you're working on, Steve?

Got it. Thank you! I look forward to reading. :)

That sounds like a good plan. I "retired" three stories this year after each one getting rejected multiple times. I have one story (other than those) that has also been rejected three times, but I actually like it, so I think I may just self-publish it on Smashwords. I'll probably only get a handful of readers, but so what? It is getting zero readers on my Google Drive (well, other than over-whelmed slush readers!). :)

Ya, I have a sequel to the one that keeps getting rejected :)... so I'm not sure what I am going to do with that. It is 2/3rd's complete but it has been dry docked for over a month. And I had plans for 2 other stories involving the same character.

I have one that I have been plugging away on. It's kind of an exorcist story, but I don't think it will qualify for horror. I'm not sure how it will turn out, but I will most likely float it by the workshop in a couple weeks.

After that I want to revisit another story that I never completed. I'm just trying to wrap up loose ends and complete stories that I abandoned. That blog entry with all the writers giving whatever advice they could fit on their hand seemed to have a strong reoccurring theme: finish what you start. Seems like good advice.

Have any of you tried or considered Submission Grinder? (http://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com/) On the PRO side, it's free, but on the CON side, I've heard it's not as complete as Duotrope.

Okay, so I signed up to try Submission Grinder, and have a quickie question, if anyone knows...

What's the difference between Date Acknowledged and Date Received? Does that mean, acknowledgement of the submission being received, and the date a response was received?

Ya, I think you have it.

I think Date acknowledged is used if they send you something like a "congrats... you've made it to round 2". But no actually rejection or acceptance. I haven't had to use it at all yet.

Date received is the day you receive Rejection or Acceptance.

Yep, sounds about right. Duotrope uses similar dates.

Thanks guys! Well, so far, so good. Even the little token Canadian 'zine I submitted to is in here. I think this will definitely serve my needs for the time being...

I just subbed a piece of flash fiction. Very short 260 words.

Anyone else send out anything in June yet?

I re-subbed my Gog and Magog story for the 6th time. :/ Ugh.

I "finished" my May/June forum competition story at 6200 words, and I REALLY like it. So now I have to decide if I am going to apply the machete and bring it down to 5k words for the forum, or just tidy it up for submission. I have time to write something else for the forum (I think, knock on wood!) Though with my luck it would end up at 7k words and I'd be in this predicament again.

I haven't subbed anything for the month of June - yet. I hope to have something done (enough) in a couple of weeks.

I did self-publish a story last night. I put it on Smashwords. :)

Ooooh, curious to hear how it goes. I'm finishing the first draft of a novelette that I'll likely self-publish, and the thought terrifies me. :)

I haven't submitted anything this month, with the heavy work I'm putting into the WIP, but I would like to go back to a sci-fi story I submitted to Lore and re-submit elsewhere after some edits. Lore liked it, but not quite enough to accept it.

Nah, I've been busy with the real WIP. I've still got the Weird West piece to tidy up and send out after beta feedback, but I'm too stuck into editing the novel at the moment. The short I've got out there on a shortlist is still on a shortlist as far as I know - they were supposed to be letting everyone know by 31st May but I haven't heard anything yet, so it's either still in consideration or they've forgotten me, I'm not sure which!

Forum competitions are just a bit of fun and practice - if you can do something useful with it instead, do that instead!

So, my ex-forum-story-that-I-used-for-submission-instead is out! That's my first "real" submission for the month, I think. I now have six stories out on submission! I don't expect to hear back from any of them until next month, though. *sigh* I hate waiting.

I'm working on another story for the May/June forum competition now. I hope it won't take more than another few days!

Glad to see you putting your work out there, Charlotte. You will succeed!

By the way, I've submitted nothing this month, nor have I written one. I will try to remedy that before the end of the month.

I've subbed the Weird West piece that went through the workshop to Ceaseless Skies. We'll see...

Amazingly, I don't think I've read that, Pete. I look forward to reading it in Ceaseless Skies! Good luck. :)
