Write One, Sub One

The story paying for this year's use of Duotrope is the one from the old thread mentioned above (Kat, if you're still interested in reading it, it's here).

It's marvelous. You must write a sequel. And congratulations! And to everyone else too. It's not easy doing this subbing.

Well, last month I did manged to submit a story and I (technically) finished a story. Nothing accepted anywhere, but maybe this month will be the one.

I already have one story (almost) ready to submit (I think I'll try ASIM again), and I plan to finish another story this month.

Ack! I took the plunge - again. I submitted by (terrible) princess story to ASIM. I really should send those slush readers brownies for inflecting my fiction on them... :o

Now - on to the next victim! ;)

Thanks! Now, if I can fool another million readers, I'll be set. ;)

(Once I figure out how to purge my writing of friggin typos!!!)

Yikes! Rejected already. Actually, it wasn't even read as the story was 550 words over their limit (10k). Apparently, they mean it when they say no more than 10k. :( :o

I whittled away some more this morning and sent it off to Beneath Ceaseless Skies. No chance there, but got to try! :)

I went to a workshop this weekend on understanding the short story market put on by a guy who reads slush for Apex (among other things - he's an industry editor). It was a good bunch of people - 9 folks, among whom there were three published authors and the professor who taught my Fantasy and Horror Literature course in university. 0_o Anyway, he spoke very highly of markets which provide feedback. He said if you're not sure if you're ready, but you think you're close, you can do worse than to submit to Shimmer, Ideomancer, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies. AISM seems okay too - though I haven't loved their readers, it's real, editorial feedback.

My last Sub was to the forum anthology. >.> I think that means I should be Writing One now. Probably the August Lake thing...

Awesome dice! Does that mean I'll get feedback from BCS? I hope so. I hadn't expected that, but any feedback would be valuable...I think. ;)

I'll get back to you soon on your story! I'm waiting on someone else (no fault of their own, just life stuff).

I just got an R from Ceaseless for my Weird West story with quite a bit of helpful feedback.

Oh, sorry to hear about the rejection.

Since they rejected your story, I'm sure they'll reject my story, too. How long did they take to get back to you? Weeks? Months? Didn't they say you made it past the first slush readers? I'm sure mine won't so maybe it wont' take as long to get my feedback.

Anyway, I am glad you got some feedback, and that they may do the same for mine. Sometimes I wonder if I should put so much weight or value in editors' feedback (it can be so harsh!), but the fact is that they read a lot of stories. Though I may not agree with their assessments, they know what they are talking about.

Turnaround time was about three weeks I think. I got my reply and feedback from the senior editor so I guess I must have made it past the intern-level slush readers if nothing else. He wasn't harsh, very helpful actually. I'll sub there again next time I have something I think they might like.

According to Duotrope, median response time for Beneath Ceaseless Skies is 32 days, and 87.5% of submissions to Beneath Ceaseless Skies receive personalized rejections. I've had a couple of stories rejected there and found the editor's feedback quite thoughtful and helpful. And they pay pro rates!

LOL well they would if either of us could actually sell them somthing! Ah well...

Gotta reach for the stars!

I've been writing a lot of sword and sorcery lately, and they're the first market I send to with that type of stuff. Quality output, pro rates, quick response times, thoughtful feedback with rejections: they just do things right.

I GOT A YES!!!

It's from a token market, but the publishers are pro and the anthology will go to print and everything. So excited! :D Now I need an author bio EXTRA hard.

Gees, it's my weekend of signing contracts and writing bios.

Squee!

Okay, I'm done.
