The Hollywood Universe – 2/11/08 (2008-02-12) 1) In Lost Boys 2, the new DVD sequel to the cult 1987 vampire movie, a new pair of Emersons come to the surf town of Luna Bay, California, a brother and sister recently orphaned and living with their eccentric aunt. A new vampire gang attracts the sister and tries to turn her, forcing the brother to track down their lifeline before she’s completely transformed. He gets help from the Frog brothers, actors Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander reprising their roles from the original movie. Corey Haim, who played the main role of Sam Emerson in the original movie, will be making a cameo, and rumors are that the film will feature a Sutherland, though probably not Kiefer Sutherland, who appeared in the first film. The sequel, due out on DVD in the summer from Warner Brothers, was directed by P.J. Pesce.
2) Director Steven Spielberg has put up a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on the film’s official website: http://www.indianajones.com The long awaited fourth film in the Indy franchise stars Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, Karen Allen, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent. The first trailer for the movie will be in theaters for the Valentine Day weekend and the film itself opens on May 22nd.
3) The sci-fi movie Moon will star Sam Rockwell as a guy stranded on the moon for three years. The film is directed by former ad executive Duncan Jones, son of rocker and sometime actor David Bowie. Rockwell is currently wowing audiences as the star of the black comedy Choke, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
4) Director Richard Kelly has just completed production on an adaptation of Richard Matheson’s short story, The Box. The horror film stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella in a story about a couple who receive a mysterious device that grants wishes, but only at the cost of a human life. Kelly’s last movie, the SF Southland Tales, will be coming out on DVD in March. Matheson’s famous SF novel, I Am Legend, was remade a third time recently into a hit movie starring Will Smith. A release date for The Box, out from Warner Brothers, has not yet been announced.
5) Luc Besson's EuropaCorp has acquired the film rights to La Mecanique du coeur (The Mechanics of the Heart) and will turn Mathias Malzieu's novel into a 3-D animated movie, with Malzieu writing and co-directing. Set in 1874, the story is about a young man whose heart was replaced with a clock when he was a baby. He has to avoid strong emotions, such as love, but finds himself unable to do so. The novel inspired an album by musical group Dionysos.
6) Hard on the heels of news that Mark Romanek had parted ways with Universal on directing a new version of The Wolf Man over budget and creative issues, comes the announcement that Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III) will now take up directing duties. The movie, set to start shooting in March, stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt.
7) Casting News:
Rob Lowe, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill and Louis C.K. will star in Ricky Gervais’ film This Side of Truth, which Gervais wrote and will co-direct with Matt Robinson, about a guy in a world where no one lies, who starts lying.
Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies joins the cast of the film Land of the Lost, opposite Will Ferrell. Land of the Lost is based on the Saturday morning children’s television series.
Amanda Seyfried will join Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body, screenwriter Diablo Cody’s and director Jason Reitman’s up-coming comic horror movie about a possessed cheerleader
Breckin Meyer, Lacey Chabert, Anne Archer, Amanda Walsh and Emma Stone are joining Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner in Mark Waters' romantic comedy The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past for New Line, a retelling of Charles Dicken’s famous A Christmas Carol. McConaughey plays Connor, a womanizer who attends the wedding of his younger brother (Meyer) and bride (Chabert). There he's haunted by the ghosts of several old flames, including the bride's best friend (Garner). Filming begins this month.
Oscar nominee and current It girl Ellen Page has just signed on to star in Sam Raimi's horror flick Drag Me to Hell. The Juno star will play the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse. Raimi wrote the script with his brother Ivan Raimi and will begin shooting the movie in Los Angeles next month for Universal Pictures. Raimi’s company Ghost House Pictures is producing the film.
8) It’s been leaked that the fourth film in the popular horror Final Destination franchise will start with a disaster at a racecar track. The sequel, which will be in 3-D, will kick-off with a high-speed racecar crash, in which an object will fly into the stands, killing some of the audience members but missing others, who are then on Death’s to-do list.
