THX 1138THX 1138 is George Lucas' movie debut from 1971 and it expands on the idea of a short movie he originally made in University.
The movie depicts a future where drugs are used to control people's minds and subdue their feelings. Sex is outlawed, but when THX 1138 stops taking the drugs and makes LUH 3417 pregnant they are cast into prison where they begin planning their escape.
After seeing it I was left with the feeling that it was a very fascinating yet a very odd movie. It's a world deprived of feelings, the monotony is somewhat complete and exactly that is something Lucas has succeeded greatly in with his extensive use of white and black as well as the constant droning sound.
As a movie in today's world I would say it's ok, but seen in a historic perspective this is a great opportunity for people to get a glimpse behind the mind of the genius behind Star Wars.
The new DVD release also contains a lot of extra features:
Commentary by co-writer/director George Lucas and co-writer/sound designer Walter Murch Theatre Of Noise - isolated sound-effects track Master sessions with Walter Murch A Legacy of Filmmakers: The Early Years of American Zoetrope Artifact from the Future: The Making of THX 1138 Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB - Lucas' student film that inspired the movie Bald, classic production featurette Original theatrical trailer
