Whilst AoE 3 is a good game, it was lacking something for me...
The game does appear to have changed, it seems only the surface has changed - the original structure of the game has remained the same. This game seems to just be AoE 2 revamped slightly, ie new units, and a few new technologys, but the basic elements are still the same. Some may argue that these are the main ingredients of AoE but I was hoping to find a new AoE that had been changed from its two predecessors to be a completely new game and was disappointed.
Age of empires is a credit to its many fans, being the same thing that people look for in an rts, but as for me, it is just same old design with a new coat of paint.

Age of Empires 3 is one of the best games in its field (RTS). I personally don't think it should be included in the whole AoE storyline because so much has changed. It is still a great game, but it should have a different name. The whole Home City idea and the shipments are great, and so are some of the new buildings and civ styles, but it's all too much to be still Age of Empires. ...How many times have I said that? It bears repeating though. I still give it a 5! :)
