the soldier lies wounded
on the battlefield
this wasn't supposed to happen
he had so much to live for
he had a wife
and two sons
who would never grow up to see their daddy
and his eyes brim with sorrow
as his breath comes in shorter gasps
he doesn't want to die
he had so much to live for

a teenager holds a bottle of pills
sulking on his bed
he was sick of living
he had nothing to live for
his girlfriend dumped him
and he had no friends
and he was failing in school
and he snarls at the unfairness
he gulps down the capsules
he wants to die
he has nothing to live for

he knows nothing of the soldier
chest heaving, blood dripping
who would give anything to live
he just wants the sleep of death
the everlasting death
