I really enjoyed this novel - and I can see why it will annoy a lot of genre fans, since it tries to do things that genre books don't often do, beneath the surface. Superb characters, and such a stylish prose (again, something that contrasts with the prosaic writing of many fantasy books).

I read this book based on the official glowing review and was very disappointed. This novel was amateurish and overall disappointing. While there were some neat ideas and concepts introduced, the book failed to execute on them. Furthermore, there were more than a few "scratch your head" moments that left you wondering where the editor was. Has potential, but needs help. Avoid.

Very surprised at this glowing review. Read this on its merits, but found the writing somewhat amateurish. Nothing breaks the pace of a novel more than being told how the characters feel over and over again through endless and repetitive inner monologues. The concept of this book is definitely interesting, but I found many of its main characters - and the entire attitude of the Council, etc. to be ludicrous.
