Self-Publishing Digs Deep Into Your Pocket: But The Rewards Can Be Gratifying

Are you trying to self-publish your work through traditional measures? Do you constantly have publishing companies telling you that your work is not what their looking for? Do agents snub you because you're not a known author? If so, join the ranks of the many people who have taken the self-publishing route.

Years ago, authors who self-published were looked upon as unsuccessful. However as the literary world continues to evolve, authors recognize that self-publishing is increasingly becoming the way to go. The popularity of self-publishing has virtually exploded over a course of a few years because being published by a major publishing house is extremely difficult, and unless you are an already successful author, almost downright impossible. Publishing houses are swamped with thousands of manuscripts sent by aspiring authors on a daily basis. Manuscripts are often returned, unread, with a bland letter of regret. On the up side, if your work is accepted by a publishing house, it's not guaranteed that it will be marketed or printed. Instead it will be cataloged! Then there are the subsidy houses that send promising letters of publication, but want an exuberant fee just so you can see your work become a reality. No wonder so many authors are flocking to self-publishing.

Self-publishing affords the aspiring author the opportunity to have hands on experience when it comes to producing his/her work. The author can keep control of the intricacies of the development of the book. It allows the author to maintain control of their work from the art work on the cover, to the title of the book, to the dialogue of their characters, to your picture being on the back of the book. Self-publishing allows the royalties no matter how insignificant they are to benefit you. When you self-publish you are literally investing in your future so you'll be more apt to make careful decisions by doing your homework instead of intrusting your future to a corporation that doesn't see you as a person, but an investment instead. If you are willing to do the leg work like submitting your own work for copy rights, acquiring your own ISBN's, going from book store to book stores literally begging them to carry your book, and basically deriving satisfaction from seeing all of your hard work come to fruitio n, then self-publishing is for you. If you're not interested in any of the above then I'd suggest you continue searching and hoping to see your work come to reality.

Please understand that self-publishing is no easy picnic. It digs deep in your pocket with little or no financial return at first, but as you continue to see that there is a demand for your book, you somehow find the money to get your books printed whether it be because a bill is paid late or not at all, whether it's because you've pawned almost all of your jewelry, your stereo, your microwave it seems drastic but sometimes it calls for just that. I know, because I've done it. But what makes it all seem worth while for me is the fact that I have more of a demand for my spiral-bound books than I have money to make them. Yes, I actually make my own books while I sit at my kitchen table. Just me and my book binder. This is a way for me to save as well as sell them until I can have them perfect bound. A self-publisher has to be creative! I think of it this way. If people are purchasing my books, while book stores like Borders, Barns & Noble, Amazon.com are constantly ordering them and they are home made, can you imagine what will happen when they are perfect bound? The thought is more than I can handle!
